After you change nameservers or DNS records, it takes a little while for the whole internet to catch up. Here's how to check where things are up to.
How Long Does It Take?
- DNS record changes (like MX or TXT records) usually work within an hour
- Nameserver changes usually work within a few hours, and can take up to 48 hours
This happens because internet providers save a copy of your domain's details for a while before checking again.
Checking From Around the World
- Go to whatsmydns.net
- Enter your domain
- Choose the record type:
- NS to check nameservers
- A to check where your website points
- MX to check where your email goes
- TXT to check SPF or verification records
- Click Search
Green ticks with the right value mean that location has the change. When most are green, you're nearly there.
It's Working Elsewhere but Not for Me
Your computer or office network may still have the old details saved:
- Try your phone on mobile data
- Clear your browser cache
- On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns - On a Mac, open Terminal and run
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder - Restart your router
Still Not Working After 48 Hours?
