How to Give a Developer Safe Access to Your Website Print

  • 0

If a web designer or developer needs to work on your site, give them their own access rather than your passwords. That way you can remove their access when they're done.

For WordPress Sites

Create a WordPress login for them:

  1. In WordPress, go to Users > Add New User
  2. Enter their name and email address
  3. Choose the Role. Administrator gives full access. Choose Editor if they only need to change content
  4. Click Add New User

When they've finished, delete their user or change their role.

For File Access

Create an FTP account just for them, limited to the folder they need. See How to Create an FTP Account. Delete it when the work is done.

For Databases

If they need direct database access, create a separate database user for them in Manage My Databases. See How to Create a MySQL Database.

For Billing and Support

You can invite them to your Client Area account with limited permissions, for example to open support tickets but not see invoices. See How to Add Another User to Your Account.

When They're Done

  • Delete their FTP account, database user and WordPress login
  • Remove them from your Client Area users
  • If you did share any passwords, change them
