How to Set a Default (Catch-All) Address Print

  • 0

The default address decides what happens to email sent to an address on your domain that doesn't exist, for example a typo like infp@yourdomain.com.au.

Setting the Default Address

  1. Log in to cPanel (see How to Log In to cPanel)
  2. In the Email section, click Default Address
  3. Choose the domain
  4. Choose what happens:
    • Discard the email while your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message: rejects the email and tells the sender the address doesn't exist (recommended)
    • Forward to Email Address: sends it to one of your real addresses, as a catch-all
  5. Click Change

Should You Use a Catch-All?

Usually not. Spammers send to made-up addresses on every domain, so a catch-all can fill your inbox with junk. Rejecting the email is better because:

  • Senders who make a typo get told straight away, so they can try again
  • You don't receive spam sent to random addresses

If you need extra addresses, create forwarders for each one instead.
